Hattiesburg Zoo Celebrates with Birthday Bash

Hattiesburg – The Hattiesburg Zoo will celebrate its 63rd birthday with the return of the annual Birthday Bash scheduled for Saturday, April 13 from 10am until 4pm. The unveiling of a new flamingo exhibit sets the stage for a day of family fun that’s “Pretty in Pink” and full of adventure for the young and young at heart!

Sponsored by Forrest General’s Cancer Center, a new Chilean flamingo exhibit located in the South America region of the Zoo will be the featured unveiling for guests to enjoy. Acquired from Zoo Atlanta’s flock, the flamingo exhibit will showcase twenty-two of these captivating tropical birds, also classified as a near-threatened species. Other additions to be unveiled during Birthday Bash festivities include a new Zebu exhibit and hands-on drum station inside the African region of the Zoo.

“The Zoo’s Birthday Bash is always an exciting event to celebrate the animals at the Zoo and unveil a continuation of progress in the Zoo’s development,” said Rick Taylor, Executive Director of The Hattiesburg Convention Commission. “Since last year’s celebration, the Zoo has undergone significant improvements to existing exhibits, as well as the addition of several animals and attractions within the Zoo. Progress like this is certainly cause for a great celebration!”

Throughout the Birthday Bash, mini celebrations will take place within the Zoo every hour on the hour, rotating among the Zoo’s four continent locations which include South America, Africa, Asia and North America’s Mississippi Habitat. At noon, during the headline celebration, the crowd will be invited to join Forrest General’s Sweet Teas in singing “Happy Birthday” to the Zoo followed by pink cupcakes and pink lemonade for everyone to enjoy. Additional activities will include special entertainment by Desmond the Songwriter, an authentic Reggae artist from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a South America-themed animal show presented by Education Curator, Krissy Hamilton. During the animal show, guests will learn interesting facts about the Chilean flamingo and have an opportunity to interact with animals from the Zoo’s education collection.
