Zoo Hosts Earth Day and Birdfest Activities


HATTIESBURG — The Hattiesburg Zoo is pleased to offer a variety of special activities for Zoo guests on Saturday, April 20 in honor of Earth Day.

Located throughout the Zoo, the EdZOOcation Department will have four interactive stations set up for guests to enjoy while taking a deeper look into conservation and animal care. Set up from 1 pm until 3 pm, these stations will include:

  •    Palm Oil Plantations & Saving Wildlife – Near entrance to Africa
  •    Poachers (the harm they cause) – Near Poacher’s Camp in Africa
  •    Birds – Animal Encounter yard next to education hut in Africa; birds from the education collection will be on display
  •   Cotton-top Tamarin – Promenade area across from new EdZOOcation Center

In conjunction with the special activities occurring in observation of Earth Day, guests of the Zoo will also have the opportunity to enjoy Birdfest 2013, a celebration of International Migratory Bird Day sponsored by the Pine Woods Audubon Society. The Society will have nine stations set up inside the Zoo’s Central Promenade area to educate the public on birds. Topics such as bird calling, bird nesting, bird migration and backyard birds will be presented with various games, handouts and activities. A local organization affiliated with the National Audubon Society, the Pine Woods Audubon Society’s special activities will also be set up from 1 pm until 3 pm.

All activities associated with Earth Day and Birdfest 2013 are free with Zoo admission. Admission to the Hattiesburg Zoo is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 2-12, $4 for seniors 65+ and military, and free for children under 2.
