Today the keeper staff is sad to share the news of the passing of the Laughing Kookaburra, Lizzy. She sang the most beautiful of all the zoo animals as the keepers would tell you. When school groups or families would stop by her exhibit and begin singing “Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree. Merry, merry king of the bush is he. Laugh, Kookaburra! Laugh,” Lizzy would join in with her own singing. Lizzy was very spunky for being an old bird preferring morning showers by the keepers, flights through her exhibit and being a bit snappy when she didn't get her way. She also enjoyed the life of luxury of having hand fed meals.
Lizzy came to be part of the Hattiesburg Zoo animal family back in December of 1989 and was a part of the zoo for 23 years. She lived to be 25 ½ years old and for a kookaburra that is past the life expectancy even for those in captivity. Typically these birds live around 10-12 years in the wild and up to 20 years in a zoo. This shows the level of care the keeper staff gives to all the animals at the Hattiesburg Zoo. She was greatly loved and will be sorely missed by everyone.
